Born in Gibson County, Tennessee, son of Richard Smith and Dinah Brazel. Martyrdom of Joseph Smith, which he witnessed; mantle of the Prophet on Brigham Young; body guard to Brigham Young; marriage to Eliza Ann Frampton, 1849; settlement in Provo, Utah, 1854, where he and his brothers operated the first flour mill; settlement in Heber City, Utah.
